Yellowstone 2019 Day 1

Day 1 (Tuesday July 16th):

On Day 1 we hiked through a Bear Management Area (BMA) which includes a traverse over Bighorn Pass. We got an early start at day break, so we could get up and over the pass before the afternoon storms rolled in. We saw Elk within the first mile of our hike. We had water crossings at 1.3 and 2.6 miles. I was attacked by a momma Grouse before the pass. It was about 7.3 miles from the start camp site to the pass and another 4.5 miles to the camp site for night 1. We got rained and hailed on after we crossed over the pass. We were in trees at lower elevation so it was all good. We pitched camp at campsite WB6 once we crossed outside the BMA.

Start: Bighorn Pass Trail (1B1) (7,385 ft.)

Peak Elevation: Bighorn Pass (9,110 ft.)

Finish: Upper Gallatin River (WB6) (7,592 ft.)

Total Miles: 11.79

Elevation Change: 1,814 ft.
